Highlight on Motion Project

September 11, 2007

It’s been a while since I write something, mostly because I was out of the country, and second because I’ve been quite busy with projects, anyway I found a space to write about what I think was the highlight from last term’s blue screen project.

The brief stated that we needed to create a motion graphics piece incorporating blue screen footage and computer generated (CG) graphics, I personaly think the project could’ve been better, I didn’t structure my work as good as I thought and ended up trying to develop my concept out of the media I had created so far, I think visually it looks good, but the concept is in a way shouting for help.

Though I think it was a success, because thanks to this I realized that what drives me the most is creating graphics, environments where graphics, or in this case footage, can come to life and transport people to a different place.

The highlight of this project was this image, I think this image gave me a step forward on finding my own style as a designer, I like playing with textures and shapes, and this illustration helped me go a little further into this style, not a style for everything that I will do but rather something that I will use when I design personal stuff, or when necessary for a client.

*I’m having some difficulties with the sound of the video, I will post it as soon as I fix that.

Term two, the brief for the first assignment for Motion Design II arrives, create a 20 seconds character animation with a voice-over.

I took my little doodles from my sketchbook put them in Illustrator and there it was, Me… well a childish almost girly version of me, reason why the voice-over is my fellow mexican classmate Jadyn. I’m not saying much but the fact that I wanted to make it as minimal and clean as possible, and give it the Sesame Street kinda feeling with the sound effects.

Enjoy!

I was going through my Foundation stuff and found this, my first Motion Graphics Project. This project had two goals to deliver, me going a little more in depth with after effects and try to create something that could be a portfolio piece.

I got a hold of After Effects quicker thanks to this project, so that goal was reached and the other one, well, personally I don’t mid showing this to people so I think I covered it as well, but see for yourself.

Here you go, enjoy!

now in motion!

I’m going to finalize this series of posts with my Foundation Final Project, why? Because it contains some of the work I wrote about on the reminiscent series, it also contains other previous projects I worked on.

This piece was developed with the intention to serve as an intro to a client, job interview, it’s fast-paced essence would quickly showcase some of the work I’ve done, with a brief explanation of the problem and the solution given.

Here’s the piece.

for “your usage

In this series of images I wanted to take on an everyday situation with a different solution; an Ad Campaign for a brand new digital camera, that’s something we see every day. They’re everywhere, Canon, Sony, Nikon; and something I noticed is that they usually follow the same format, they show an image of the camera, the name, resolution, mega pixels and sometimes a picture supposedly taken with that camera.

Well my take on it was to focus on who can use it, these are 5 of what could be a never ending series of posters advertising this camera, there’s only one thing missing, a brand, there’s none at the moment for copyright issues, but the composition is ready to implement.

What I’m trying to communicate is either you are a fashion photographer, an automotive photographer, hobbyist or any other use for the camera you might think of, this is the one for you. Need the specs, ask your local camera shop, because I don’t know you, but even when I see the specs on something I wanna buy on an ad poster, I always ask at the store before I buy it.

Here are some examples of how this campaign would look like [click on the images below to reveal each proposal.]

colour+

This experimental was initiated with the idea of visually presenting the quality that colour adds to design, and how just a slight change in color intensity can change the perception of an image. I love playing with typography and text in my design projects; and Pierre Bonnard’s words: “Colour does not add a pleasant quality to design, it reinforces it.” fitted perfectly with my idea.

Take a quick look and see where your eyes go.

Note how the centre of attention are the coloured areas, even though black has a greater value than magenta. Now, look at the next image.

See how it goes from the magenta to the black areas.

This next image is an iteration of the same idea, I just made the difference more obvious, the background goes being the most noticeable part of the piece to be just a background.

inspiration journal

I chose reminiscent as the name of this series of posts because it is indeed a reminder of my past year in Vancouver. I personally believe that reflects my growth from a person to a designer. It also reminds if my time before art school, when my close-to-nothing design knowledge guided my designs through some really fascinating experiments, that I will share with you in the next couple of days.

This is a series called “Inspiration Journal” because that was actually the name of the project, in which we had to choose three things, persons or situations that inspired us.

slam+reflektions.mnml

The first VFS Slam was hosted today, and it was so much fun, my team was conformed by Leah and Axel from DD08 and Hugh and Me from DD09. Our goal was to create a 30 seconds spot to try to gain the forgiveness and simpathy of the public after they screwed up by not putting any Vitamin C in their Vitamin C product.

After receiving the brief we were provided a camera and a tripod to do so, we had a really tight schedule we had to lock the audio by 2 pm, and drop the movie before 5 pm of the same day, meaning that we had 8 hours to make a full working commercial that had to convey the message stated on the brief.

Here’s our spot.

After the showcase of the spots I literally jumped from the Theatre to the Bearpit, to participate in a Flash BitmapClass/3d double marathon with Paul Ortchanian designer and developer of reflektions.mnml
